The Georgia Cities Foundation and the National Monuments Foundation
invites you to a lecture by architect, urban designer, and author,
Dhiru Thadani, who will speak about his magnum opus The Language of
Towns and Cities: A Visual Dictionary at the Millennium Gate Museum
on Friday, April 29, 2011 at 7:00 PM. A reception immediately
following will feature light hors d’oeuvres and a “donation” bar. Seating is limited and tickets are $15.

The Language of Towns and Cities: A Visual Dictionary
How often do citizens, city officials, and other decision-makers find
confusion instead of clarity when discussing urban design? How can
we attempt to help guide neighborhoods, towns, and cities and
overcome the failures of the past, address current issues, and
anticipate the needs of the future when we lack a common language on
urban design?
Dhiru Thadani’s The Language of Towns & Cities: A Visual Dictionary
offers a visual “encyclodictionary” that allows the professional and
the layperson easy access to a vast source of ideas, materials, and
methods at once comprehensive and accessible. Over a decade in the
making, this landmark publication is meticulously researched and
extensively illustrated with photographs, drawings, and charts, and
includes a detailed glossary of more than seven hundred words and
terms commonly used in architecture and urban planning.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR: *Dhiru A. Thadani* is the recipient of the 2011
Seaside Prize. He is a practicing architect, planner, and educator
who has worked in North and South America, Europe, and Asia, in urban
design, town planning, and architectural design.
